CASA Popeea BOUTIQUE HOTEL: un secol de istorie, un veac de amintiri [memories of a hundred years of history]
Casa Popeea Boutique Hotel se ascunde pe o stradă liniștită în miezul fostului cartier elen al Brăilei. Este înconjurată de cladiri cochete de început de secol XX ce evocă atmosfera cosmopolită de odinioară a orașului, punte între Orient si Occident. Construită în 1900, casa a supraviețuit unui incendiu și a schimbat mai mulți proprietari, devenind un important reper estetic pentru identitatea comunitară a Brăilei. Înainte de a intra in proprietatea statului, casa a fost deținută de un ofițer in armata regală, închis din motive politice după cel de-al doilea razboi mondial. Soția lui era fiica negustorului brăilean Popeea, care a dat și numele casei.
Transformarea Casei Popeea in Casa Popeea Boutique Hotel a fost facută cu mare grija si sensibilitate față de moștenirea istorică și arhitecturală pe care aceasta o reprezintă. Casa Popeea Boutique Hotel cea renascută spune povestea unei evoluții de la clădire de patrimoniu la spații de locuit cu facilități contemporane. Farmecul clădirii a fost subliniat nu prin imitarea elementelor originale, ci prin reinterpretarea acestora pentru secolul XXI. Face exceptie restaurarea scării interioare monumentale, care ramâne o punte de legatură între vechi si nou. Detalii precum draperiile luxoase din catifea, mobilierul din stejar creat la comandă si placajele din piatră naturală pun în valoare contextul istoric.
[Casa Popeea Boutique Hotel is tucked away on a quiet street in the heart of Braila’s old Greek quarter. It is set amongst elegant early 20th century buildings that evoke the erstwhile cosmopolitan vibe of the city as a meeting point between East and West. Built in 1900, the house survived a fire and changed hands several times while becoming a key aesthetic landmark for Braila’s community identity. Before it became the property of the Romanian state, the house belonged to an officer in the Royal Army who was imprisoned after World War II for political reasons. His wife was the daughter of a local merchant called Popeea, who gave the house its name.
The transformation of the existing building into Casa Popeea Boutique Hotel was driven by the idea that its historic and architectural heritage should be emphasised in the spatial context and original materiality of the structure. The reborn Casa Popeea Boutique Hotel tells the story of its evolution from a listed building to living spaces with contemporary facilities. Articulate, richly detailed and filled with space and light, Casa Popeea Boutique Hotel is recognisably contemporary yet of its time and place – the new reflects the lost without imitating it. The building’s original oak staircase has been meticulously restored, and details such as luxurious velvet curtains, custom made oak furniture and natural stone tiling enhance the historical context.]
